Out of the ashes

Twenty years after the whole country watched him sing "Whipping Post," Bo Bice is still the real thing. The last few years knocked him down. He got back up.

Huntsville-born, church-raised, road-hardened. The runner-up of American Idol's most-watched season, the front man who carried Blood, Sweat & Tears for five years, the voice that sang for troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and Guantanamo Bay. This is the next chapter, and it's the loudest one yet.

Faith. Family. Freedom.

Three things Bo doesn't sing around. He sings from them.

Faith

Raised in church

His mother and grandmother were gospel singers. "Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior" isn't a line in a bio for Bo; it's the reason there's a gospel record in his catalog and a hymn in most of his sets.

Country

Served those who serve

Multiple USO-style tours to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and Guantanamo Bay, honored at the White House for it, and a standing rule that a Bo Bice tour should stop at military bases.

Southern Rock

Alabama in the blood

Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker: he's shared stages and studios with the music he grew up on. Alabama Music Hall of Fame inductee, with his own day on the state calendar.

The music

Four studio albums, from the RCA debut The Real Thing (Gold, produced with Clive Davis) to the Southern gospel of New Soul Revival. Duets with Carlos Santana, Joe Diffie and Robin Meade. The title track to Blades of Glory. And in 2024, a bluegrass take on Bob Seger's "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" that proved the voice hasn't lost a thing.
